The abolition of detention centers and other prisons

The Prison Archive was established in Bremen at a time, when the idea of abolishing prisons gained some notoriety in Germany. Nils Christie and Thomas Mathiesen visited the University of Bremen and had ardent followers here, who translated and published their basic abolitionist works. The Prison Archive collected these and other texts critical of the prison system. In due course, the publications of Johannes Feest and some of his doctoral students and co-workers, took on an openly abolitionist perspective. A manifesto demanding the abolition of prisons grew out of a meeting in 2019, at the new home of the Prison Archive in Dortmund.
