Transnational, decolonial reflections on the abolition of prisons and punishment
Transnationale, dekoloniale Überlegungen zur Abschaffung von Gefängnissen und Bestrafung

Mechthild Nagel, Professor of Philosophy and Africana Studies, is Director of the Center for Ethics, Peace, and Social Justice at SUNY Cortland and Founding Editor of Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women’s and Gender Studies. Author of Masking the Abject: A Genealogy of Play (Lexington, 2002) and Ludic Ubuntu Ethics: Decolonizing Justice (Routledge, 2023), she co-edited 7 anthologies. She is interested in critical justice studies, global feminisms, critical race theory, diversity studies, Indigenous justice studies. She is founder of Sophia’s Garden, a partnership with area Cortland schools, where college students explore philosophy with children, from toddlers to teens.

The lecture will be in English and will be summarised in sections in German. The subsequent discussion will be bilingual.
